Fundraising & Convention Update: AnimeBoston, Aetherfest & AnimeNext

At Nova Albion. Attendee Astra Kim, artist James Ng, and my intellectual partner-in-crime Jaymee Goh (with Viceroy Chang on her shoulder) all showing off their buttons with pride.

The musician Voltaire points to his Helping Hands button at The Anachronism II in NYC. We raised $220 in button sales that night!

Wow–less than one month into our fundraising period, and the Rising Phoenix fundraiser is already 2/3s of the way towards its initial goal of at least $1000. We’ve raised over $600 dollars so far — and we have barely begun. My fundraising partners and I are thrilled and grateful for the continuous signal-boosting from everyone in the steampunk & anime communities.

In addition, people have been asking if there is a method of donating under the Rising Phoenix banner for amounts more than the cost of a button. Well, your generosity has been answered–you can now directly donate to our cause via the Rising Phoenix Volunteer Fundraiser page on Shelterbox. Just be sure to email me directly if you want to be added to our Rising Phoenix Circle page & to enter in the steampunk giveaway in September.

The convention season is now in full force. Almost every weekend from now until the end of May, I will be doing something steampunk-related for Beyond Victoriana.

After the jump is a recap of some upcoming places where myself and my fundraising partners at Button Me Up will be.

A week and a half into our fundraiser, and the steampunk community has really been out there pushing our cause. Thank you to everyone who’ve signal-boosted our fundraiser on their blog, Twitter, Livejournal, website, through word of mouth, etc. I also want to thank the good congoers of Nova Albion who opened their hearts and their wallets to buy a button for Japan when I visited California last weekend.

Wondering about our progress so far? See that nifty button on the left-hand corner with the golden Phoenix? That leads to our Rising Phoenix Circle page, which features a list of participants and the amount raised thus far.

Not only that, but I can start dropping some hints about the FREE STEAMPUNK GIVEAWAYS that are open to anyone who gets a button. Read on after the jump.

As you all know, on March 11th 2011, a 9.0 magnitude earthquake shattered thousands of lives in Japan. As of today, the death toll has reached over 8,000 people, with up to 15,000 people missing and over half a million without homes. Furthermore, the Fukushima nuclear plant is dealing with radiation leaks that could contaminate the nearby area further and put more lives at risk.

In cooperation with Button Me Up, Beyond Victoriana has started the Rising Phoenix Fundraiser for Japan, and will be selling special limited-edition buttons to raise money for the international aid organization Shelterbox to help provide for the devastated survivors of this mounting tragedy.

Each button costs a mere $2 each. ONE HUNDRED PERCENT of all profits made from the sale of these buttons will go toward Shelterbox. We hope to raise at least $1,000 USD between now and the end of Labor Day weekend, SEPTEMBER 5th, 2011.

As of April 13th, donors now have the option of also giving directly to Shelterbox under the Rising Phoenix banner and receive a complimentary set of buttons as a thank you.

There are three different button options to choose from, each incorporating an aspect of Japanese culture. Each button is 1 and 1/2 inches in diameter. A perfect addition to any jacket, bag, or steampunk vest.

Domestic &  international readers can order buttons directly through Button Me Up’s Etsy store.

In addition, we’re not just doing online sales–from now until the end of Labor Day weekend, SEPTEMBER 5TH, 2011, myself and other volunteers will be selling these limited edition buttons at every single steampunk-related event I will be going to.

Every single steampunk-related event, whether it be a convention, nightclub event, photoshoot, concert, Meetup gathering, etc., these buttons will be available for purchase. Contributions will be made directly to Shelterbox throughout the summer, and I’ll be giving periodic updates about how much money has been donated thus far.

To keep in mind just exactly how many events that entails, see this list of where I will be selling:

Nova Albion 2011
The Anachronism II
Anime Boston (in cooperation with Button Me Up)
International Steampunk City
Steampunk World’s Fair
AnimeNext (Button Me Up only)
plus, any future events this summer!

After the jump, read more about Shelterbox’s mission, and how Beyond Victoriana will give a special opportunity for people who donate in connection to our blog.
